Area Under the Curve

AUC

Definition

The total drug exposure over time, calculated as the integral of the plasma concentration-time curve. AUC reflects overall systemic drug exposure and is the primary measure used to determine bioequivalence between generic and brand-name drugs.

Example

For a generic drug to be approved, its AUC must be within 80-125% of the brand-name drug's AUC.
