Definition

The Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical classification system maintained by the World Health Organization, which organizes drugs into groups at five levels based on the organ system they act on, their therapeutic effect, pharmacological properties, and chemical structure.

Example

Metformin's ATC code is A10BA02: A (Alimentary tract), 10 (drugs used in diabetes), B (blood glucose lowering drugs), A (biguanides), 02 (metformin).
