A route of drug administration where the medication is placed under the tongue, allowing absorption through the highly vascular sublingual mucosa directly into the bloodstream. This bypasses first-pass metabolism and provides rapid onset of action.
Example
Sublingual nitroglycerin dissolves under the tongue in about 1-2 minutes, providing rapid relief of angina chest pain.
