Antagonist

Definition

A drug that binds to a receptor but does not activate it, instead blocking the receptor and preventing agonists from producing their effect. Competitive antagonists can be overcome by higher concentrations of agonist, while non-competitive antagonists cannot.

Example

Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist (ARB) that blocks the vasoconstricting effect of angiotensin II, lowering blood pressure.
