Cytochrome P450

CYP450

Definition

A superfamily of liver enzymes responsible for metabolizing approximately 75% of all drugs. Key isoforms include CYP3A4 (metabolizes ~50% of drugs), CYP2D6, CYP2C9, and CYP1A2. Drugs that inhibit or induce these enzymes can significantly alter the metabolism of other medications.

Example

Grapefruit juice inhibits CYP3A4, which can dramatically increase blood levels of statins like simvastatin, raising the risk of muscle damage.
