Drug Holiday

Definition

A planned, temporary discontinuation of a medication, typically to reduce long-term side effects, restore drug sensitivity, or assess whether the medication is still needed. Drug holidays should only be done under medical supervision.

Example

Bisphosphonate drug holidays (stopping after 3-5 years of osteoporosis treatment) are sometimes recommended because the drug's bone-protective effects persist for months to years after stopping.
