Taper

Definition

The gradual reduction of a drug dose over time to prevent withdrawal symptoms or rebound effects. Abrupt discontinuation of certain drugs (corticosteroids, benzodiazepines, antidepressants, opioids) can cause serious or dangerous withdrawal syndromes.

Example

After long-term prednisone use, the dose is tapered gradually (e.g., reducing by 5 mg per week) to allow the adrenal glands to resume natural cortisol production.
