Extended Release

ER/XR

Definition

A drug formulation designed to release the active ingredient gradually over an extended period, allowing less frequent dosing. Extended-release tablets should not be crushed or chewed, as this destroys the controlled-release mechanism and can cause dangerous dose dumping.

Example

Metoprolol ER is taken once daily, while immediate-release metoprolol requires dosing 2-3 times per day.
