Potency

Definition

The amount of drug needed to produce a given effect. A more potent drug achieves the same effect at a lower dose. Potency is different from efficacy — a drug can be highly potent but have limited maximum effect.

Example

Hydromorphone is about 5-7 times more potent than morphine, meaning a smaller dose produces equivalent pain relief.
