Enzyme Inhibition

Definición

The process by which a drug decreases the activity of metabolizing enzymes, leading to slower breakdown and increased blood levels of co-administered drugs. Unlike induction, inhibition can occur rapidly (within hours) and may cause toxicity of the affected drug.

Ejemplo

Ketoconazole inhibits CYP3A4, which can dangerously increase blood levels of certain immunosuppressants like cyclosporine.
