Synergism

Definition

An interaction where the combined effect of two drugs is greater than the sum of their individual effects. Synergism can be therapeutically beneficial (combining antibiotics) or dangerous (combining sedatives with alcohol).

Example

Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim) is a synergistic antibiotic combination — each drug inhibits a different step in bacterial folic acid synthesis, making the combination far more effective than either drug alone.
